Finley Fears is a 15-year-old from Texas whose life has helped shape the heart of fearlessHOPE. Adventurous, funny, and determined, she loves challenging herself and wants what so many teenagers want: friendship, independence, and the freedom to explore who she is becoming.
Finley was born blind and has undergone 29 eye surgeries. Over years of procedures, setbacks, and recoveries, she gained enough vision to experience parts of the world visually. As she grew, she learned to navigate a sighted world in her own way, pursuing athletics and becoming an All-American cheerleader.
A New Chapter
A recent medical crisis changed Finley’s vision again. Severe eye pain and inflammation led to 16 days of care at Duke, where she underwent emergency surgeries and intensive treatment. During that time, she also experienced a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Despite her doctors’ efforts, she lost significantly more of her remaining vision.
Finley now primarily perceives light and color. She is learning new ways to approach parts of daily life she had previously mastered, including school, mobility, athletics, and the routines that support her independence. This adjustment brings real challenges and uncertainty, even as she continues to pursue the experiences and relationships that matter to her.
Understanding Finley
Finley’s experience offers a personal window into the range of vision a blind person may have. For her, blindness has included both periods of greater usable vision and periods when light and color are what she can primarily perceive.
Understanding Finley also means seeing the whole person: her humor, her competitive spirit, her friendships, and her hopes for the future. Her accomplishments are part of her story, alongside the ordinary moments of being a teenager and the difficult days when adapting takes time, patience, and support.
The Heart Behind fearlessHOPE
Finley’s journey helps give purpose to fearlessHOPE’s Christ-driven calling to support children experiencing vision impairment and loss and the families who love them. Her family knows how much it matters to find someone who understands, to have help locating resources, and to feel supported when the path ahead is uncertain.
By sharing Finley’s story, we hope to build that understanding and connection for other families. We invite you to get to know her as she continues to grow, adapt, and discover what comes next.
